One of the banes of my teaching existence has been prefixes and suffixes. I dread teaching them, they are (in my opinion) boring and I've never had any "fun" activities for students to practice them. I've spent years looking around for activities or projects for students to do while practicing the meanings of prefixes and suffixes. Simultaneously I've been trying to think of an activity or project that I could create for students to practice this skill. A couple weeks ago I created a puzzle for a friend of mine to use in his class at church. That week I went to bed with puzzles on the brain. It just so happened that I also started planning out a new unit for one of my classes that week, and guess what one of the skills was? Yeah, not a hard inference to make, it was prefixes and suffixes. Somehow all of this mixed together in the soup of my subconscious thoughts and out popped an idea: Prefix and Suffix Puzzles. I created two different levels. Level one consists of 2-piece puzzles containing the 17 most common prefix and 19 most common suffixes in the English language. The top piece lists the prefix or suffix and the bottom piece notes the meaning. Level two consists of 6-piece puzzles containing the 18 common words containing prefixes or suffixes. The first piece has the affix, the second piece has the base word, the third piece has the word + affix, the fourth piece the meaning of the affix, the fifth piece the meaning of the word + affix, and the sixth piece has a picture. Have these puzzles moved the teaching of prefixes and suffixes into the "I love teaching this!" category? No, but they are more fun than the paper-and-pencil and straight memorization activities I've used before. Both of the levels are available in my teacher stores, as well as a bundle that contains both levels for slight discount.
