I want to fist give credit for this project to Lind Kamp of Around the Kampfire, I ran across her blog and this idea by accident one day (OK, so I was indulging myself in Pinterest again) and stuck it away in a file for another day. That day came a few weeks ago when I was working with my new arrivals and needed to teach them vocabulary for shapes, as well as the terms edge and corner. I found the idea in my files, tweaked it a bit, and voila--a vocabulary exercise and new classroom display (and about time too, the Picture Perfect Prepositions were starting to loose a bit of their perfection). Since the goal of this project was a focus on basic shape names and our three key vocabulary words, I decided to provide the students with a form that they could complete. This removed the linguistic demands of writing their own sentences, and gave me a chance to model the correct use of quotation marks. I was really impressed with how these turned out. Due to testing and other events at the school we only had about twenty minutes for the entire project. I really didn't think what they'd be able to produce would be fit for display, but the students really went above and beyond. I showed them a quick example of how to complete the form, laid out the paper, glue, scissors, markers, and they did the rest! On a side note, I've been working on my phonics-based vocabulary curriculum again. My dad made me a new game and it, along with another idea I had, is being added to the program as we speak. I'm also working on a part two that includes ten more word family sets. I hope to have it finished and ready to share soon. It will definitely be ready by the end of May, because I'm going to presenting it at the 2015 MABE conference in Dearborn! I'm very excited for this opportunity! | More shape practice: |
